This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 9 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 4 Test 1 question:
“Do you think it’s important for people to play games? [Why/Why not?]”
Sample 1: Important
Absolutely, I believe that participating in games is pivotal for individuals. One of the main reasons is that it fosters camaraderie and strengthens relationships. Whether it’s playing chess with a grandparent or video games with friends, it’s a wonderful way to bond and build lasting connections. The shared experiences and the competitive yet friendly environment that games provide can really bring people closer together.
Sample 2: Important
In my view, games are an integral part of human life, primarily because they contribute significantly to personal development. Games often demand strategic thinking, quick decision-making, and problem-solving skills. These attributes, although honed in a leisurely context, can be transferred to real-life situations, making individuals more adept at dealing with various challenges.
Sample 3: Important
I’m firmly convinced that games, particularly physical ones, hold a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in sports or outdoor games not only boosts physical fitness but also promotes mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety. It’s quite like the old adage goes, “A healthy mind in a healthy body.”
Sample 4: Not Important
In my view, it’s not imperative for people to immerse themselves in games. The risk of developing an unhealthy dependence on games, especially video games, is a real concern. It’s important to maintain a balance and not let any form of entertainment dominate our lives to the point where it disrupts our daily routines or responsibilities.
Sample 5: Not Important
You know, I wouldn’t say it’s crucial for folks to engage in games. One of my reasons stems from the time investment that games require. In today’s fast-paced world, people are often juggling multiple responsibilities, ranging from their jobs to their family duties. So, allocating a substantial chunk of time to games might seem like a luxury few can afford. In my opinion, the time could be better spent on pursuits that offer tangible benefits, such as learning a new skill or spending quality time with loved ones.
Sample 6: Not Important
I don’t see it as essential for people to play games because it could potentially limit their social interactions. While games can indeed serve as a platform for social interaction, they also have the potential to isolate players within their gaming world. This could lead to a lack of real-life social skills, which are vital for personal and professional growth.
Sample 7: It depends
I reckon the importance of games hinges on the circumstances and individual preferences. For someone who thrives on social interactions and physical activity, team sports might be vital. In contrast, introverted individuals might find solitary games more appealing and beneficial. So, it’s not a one-size-fits-all scenario; rather, it’s about what suits one’s personality and lifestyle.
Sample 8: It depends
I believe the importance of games is conditional, heavily dependent on the type of game and the manner in which it’s played. Active games or sports, for instance, are excellent for physical health and teamwork, but excessive video gaming can lead to sedentary behaviors and social isolation. Therefore, it’s crucial to maintain a healthy balance and choose games that are truly beneficial.
Sample 9: Not Sure
Truthfully, I’m somewhat undecided on the importance of engaging in games. While it’s true that games can act as a social lubricant and cognitive stimulant, I can’t help but think about the negative impacts, especially in relation to video games. Some people tend to get too engrossed in them, leading to an unhealthy lifestyle or even addiction. So, I guess it’s not a black-and-white situation.
Sample 10: Not Sure
Well, to be honest, I’m not really certain about the importance of games. I’ve never been much of a gamer myself, and my exposure to games, be it board games or sports, has been quite limited. So, I might not be the best person to judge their significance in people’s lives.
