Speaker 1 (1)
Section three.
Speaker 1 (2)
You're going to hear a university tutor interviewing a candidate for a place on a postgraduate diploma course in teaching geography.
Speaker 1 (3)
First, you have some time to look at questions 21 to 27.
Speaker 1 (4)
Now listen carefully to the first part of the interview and answer questions twenty one to twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (6)
Jonathan Briggs, isn't it?
Speaker 3 (8)
That's right.
Speaker 2 (9)
Do come in and sit
Speaker 2 (13)
Well, Jonathan, as we explained in your letter, in this part of the interview, we like to talk through your application form, your experience to date, etcetera.
Speaker 2 (14)
And then in the second part, you go for a group interview.
Speaker 3 (15)
Group interview.
Speaker 3 (17)
I understand.
Speaker 2 (18)
So your first degree was in economics.
Speaker 3 (20)
But I also did politics as a major strand.
Speaker 2 (22)
And you graduated in 1989.
Speaker 2 (23)
And I see you've been doing some teaching.
Speaker 3 (25)
I worked as a volunteer teacher in West Africa.
Speaker 3 (26)
I was there for almost three years in total from 1990 to 1992.
Speaker 2 (27)
How interesting.
Speaker 2 (28)
What organization was that with?
Speaker 3 (29)
It's not one of the major ones.
Speaker 3 (30)
It's called Teach south.
Speaker 2 (33)
I have heard of it.
Speaker 2 (34)
It operates in several African countries, doesn't it?
Speaker 2 (35)
And what kind of school was it?
Speaker 3 (36)
A rural cooperative.
Speaker 2 (37)
Oh, a rural cooperative.
Speaker 2 (38)
How interesting.
Speaker 2 (39)
And what did you teach?
Speaker 3 (40)
A variety of things in different years.
Speaker 3 (41)
I did with forms one to three, mainly geography, and some English with form five.
Speaker 3 (42)
Then in my final year, I took on some agricultural science with the top year.
Speaker 3 (43)
That's form six.
Speaker 2 (45)
Quite a variety then.
Speaker 3 (46)
I also ran the school farm.
Speaker 2 (47)
How interesting.
Speaker 1 (48)
Before the interview continues, you have some time to look at questions 28 to 30.
Speaker 1 (49)
Now listen to the rest of the interview and answer questions 28 to 30.
Speaker 2 (50)
And how did you find the whole experience?
Speaker 3 (51)
I'll be honest with you.
Speaker 3 (52)
At the end of the first year, I really wanted to leave and come home.
Speaker 2 (53)
Oh, why was that?
Speaker 3 (54)
Well, I was very homesick at first and missed my family.
Speaker 2 (56)
I can understand that.
Speaker 3 (57)
And I also found it frustrating to have so few teaching resources.
Speaker 3 (58)
But I did decide to stay, and in the end, I extended my tour to a third year.
Speaker 2 (60)
Things must have looked up then.
Speaker 3 (62)
We set up a very successful project, breeding cattle to sell locally.
Speaker 3 (64)
And then after a lot of hard work, we finally got funds for new farm buildings.
Speaker 2 (65)
And you wanted to see things through?
Speaker 2 (67)
And that's why you want to train to teach geography?
Speaker 3 (69)
I've had a couple of jobs since then, but I now realize I like teaching best.
Speaker 3 (70)
And I chose geography because because it's my favorite subject.
Speaker 3 (71)
And also because I I think it has so many useful applications.
Speaker 2 (72)
Well, you certainly have had some interesting work experience.
Speaker 2 (73)
I'll ask you now to go on to the next stage of the interview.
Speaker 1 (74)
That is the end of section three.
Speaker 1 (75)
You will now have half a minute to check your answers.
Speaker 1 (76)
Now turn to section four.
