The line graph illustrates the percentage of four materials—paper and cardboard, glass containers, aluminium cans and plastics—that were recycled in a particular country between 1982 and 2010.
Overall, paper and cardboard consistently recorded the highest recycling rates throughout the period, despite a slight decline after the mid-1990s. In contrast, plastics remained the least recycled material, showing only a minimal increase. Meanwhile, aluminium cans experienced the most significant growth over time.
In 1982, around 65% of paper and cardboard was recycled. This figure rose to approximately 70% in 1986, dipped slightly in 1990, and then peaked at about 80% in 1994. After that, the rate gradually decreased, ending at roughly 70% in 2010. Glass recycling began at 50% in 1982, fell to 40% in 1990, and then steadily increased to reach 60% by the end of the period.
Aluminium cans showed a dramatic upward trend, rising from about 5% in 1986 to nearly 45% in 2010. By comparison, plastics increased slowly from around 2–3% in 1990 to just under 10% in 2010.
In summary, while paper remained dominant, aluminium saw the fastest growth, and plastics lagged far behind.
