It is widely argued that tall buildings are the best solution authorities can use to accommodate ever-increasing population in metropolis. I partly agree to this as vertical towers can house more people on a smaller land footprint than villas, especially when land is scarce but it should be combined with other residential projects as well to improve quality of life.
To begin with, high-rise building blocks can improve space utilization efficiently. These residential blocks can help more people to fulfill their housing needs without using large amount of land. In large metropolitan areas, land is generally expensive, so building upward is a practical way to increase housing supply. Meanwhile, high-rise residential projects can also reduce urban sprawl, helping to avoid cities from expanding extensively and conserving nearby agricultural and natural areas. Consequently, there will be more space available for farming and recreational activities, which help in both economic growth and environmental protection.
On the other hand, relying solely on high-rise buildings can put additional pressure on local infrastructure such as roads, hospitals, schools, and other public facilitires. More importantly, densely populated areas may have poorly planned residential blocks, resulting in insufficient green spaces and recreational areas. This lack of space to relax and socialize can negatively impact quality of life in those areas. So, governmnts should offer proeprly-planned high-rise housing balanced with suburban communities.
To sum it up, I agree that tall apartment blocks are an important solution to housing shortages in large cities because they make efficient use of limited land. Nevertheless, a combination of high-rise and other well-planned forms of housing would be more effective in meeting the needs of growing urban populations.
