Back in 2016, the Government of Sri Lanka imposed a new rule on the amount of sugar, salt, and fat contained in packaged food. Because of modern consumer culture, many people rely on these packaged junk foods available in the market. Therefore, the Ministry of Education projected that in the next 10 years, the number of people suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and high blood cholesterol will double. These diseases are not just isolated conditions but also risk factors for many other health issues. For instance, if an individual suffers from diabetes for more than 10 years, it can cause many microvascular and macrovascular complications and eventually lead to multi-organ failure. When it comes to hypertension, it can substantially damage kidney function. On the other hand, high blood cholesterol is a risk factor for individuals having future myocardial infarctions and strokes. Considering that individuals with these diseases can significantly strain government resources and overwhelm the healthcare system, the government imposed this rule as a preventive measure. The rule requires companies that manufacture junk foods to clearly mention the amounts of sugar, salt, and fat composition on their packaging, giving customers a choice. Additionally, the government set maximum limits. If manufacturers exceed these limits, the government will impose additional taxes to discourage consumers from purchasing these products. Furthermore, the government restricted these manufacturers from primarily targeting children in their advertising, specifically censoring such advertisements.
