Well, in Sri Lanka, there are many celebrations, but the most memorable celebration for Sinhalese and Buddhists annually is the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, which is called Sinhala and Tamil Avarudu. It falls on the 13th and 14th of every year. It is celebrated to mark the time when the sun enters the zodiac sign from Pisces to Aries. We all celebrate this as an important religious activity, and we perform all the activities at auspicious times. There is a specific time to do every activity during this period, and we engage in rituals like lighting the hearth and oil lamps, and having meals at auspicious times. We also exchange money and other gifts. To prepare for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, we wear new clothes and prepare many traditional meals like milk rice, which we call Kiribath, as well as Kya Koki, asmi, and aluwa. These are the sweets that we prepare to share with our neighbors and relatives when they come to celebrate this event during the month of April. We also play several games like Pancha Kaleer, climbing the grease pole, Kottapura or pillow fighting, and other deeply symbolic games that occur during this celebration. Mainly, it takes place in our homes, and the oil lamp activities occur in the temples of Trincomalee. This is memorable because it is the time when our family gathers together. We have a huge holiday for the celebration of Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
