One monument that I really admire is the Garuda Wisnu Kencana, or commonly known as the GWK statue, located in Bali, Indonesia. This statue represents the Hindu god Vishnu riding his mount Garuda, which is a mythical bird. It's one of the tallest statues in the world, standing at approximately 120 meters tall, including its pedestal. The statue is built of copper and brass. The history behind its construction is quite fascinating. It began in the 1990s, facing several delays due to financial and logistical challenges. Finally, it was completed in 2018. The entire project was meant to celebrate Indonesian culture, particularly the Hindu heritage in Bali, and to promote tourism. I am particularly drawn to the GWK statue, not just because of its monumental size and artistic beauty, but also because it represents national pride. Whenever I visit Bali, the GWK statue serves as a reminder of the island's deep spiritual roots and enduring cultural significance.
