Quite recently on a casual day, I came across a video on YouTube showcasing a painting called Devil’s Checkmate. At the center of the composition is a table, where a man sits on one side and the devil on the other. Standing silently across the table is an angel observing the game. The devil appears uncertain and hesitant, even though he is on the edge of winning, while the man seems quietly anxious and desperate, feeling the weight of the feet. What struck me the most was the subtle tension in the painting. At first glance, it seems that the man is doomed to lose. Yet, if one looks closely, it becomes clear that the artist has cleverly illustrated a possible path for him to turn the game around. Interestingly, the angel doesn’t intervene. She observes without expression, which I interpret as a symbol of guidance and hope without forcing an outcome.
