Uh, a time when I learned something unexpectedly happened earlier this year during a school field trip with my preschool class. As a teacher, I was mainly focused on keeping the children safe and engaged. So I wasn’t expecting to learn anything new myself. We visited a small local farm and one of the farmers showed the children have plants at a spawn to touch and light. He demonstrated this using a sensitive plant, the kind whose leaves fold when you touch them. I had seen these plants before, but I never knew why they have behaved that way. The farmer explained that the plant collapses its leaves as a protective mechanism to avoid being eaten by insects. What I learned was the simple science behind this movement. The plant releases water from the, from its cells, causing the leaves to fold quickly. It’s a, uh, basic biological reaction. But hearing it explained in such a simple and visual way made it stick with me. It was unexpected because I was in teaching teacher mode, thinking the children were the one who would be learning that day. I definitely didn’t expect her to walk away with new knowledge about plant biology from a preschool field trip. This experience affected me in a surprisingly positive way. It reminded me that learning can happen anywhere and at any time, even when I, um, am the one who’s supposed to be doing the teaching. It’s encouraged me to stay curious and open minded. And I’ve become more intentional about including small scientific explanation in my lessons because I realized that even simple facts can spark wonder in both children and adults.
