It was a small family gathering at home and we had celebrated a nice dinner together. After we finish eating, my grandfather gave me a red envelope with some money inside. In my culture Vietnamese, it is quite common for older family members to give money to younger members instead of a physical gift especially on birthdays or during some special locations like Lunar New Year. He said it was a way to wish me a good luck in my life and also in my future. At first I felt a bit shy because I wasn’t expecting to receive money as a gift and I thought that it was mainly given to me in Lunar New Year. But then after that I realized that it was his way of showing love and care to me. So I used the money to buy some things that I like and also buy some books that I had been wanting for a long time. So it was actually a really meaningful and practical present. I felt really grateful and touched and it wasn’t just about the amount of money that he gave me but more about his thoughts and the tradition behind it and it always remind me how lucky I am to have my grandfather and he made my birthday even more special and meaningful.
