One time that I helped somebody in need was my sister. I had just come back from the gym when I got a call from her, which didn't strike me as weird since we talk almost every day. But the second I picked up, I could tell that something was wrong. She was hyperventilating, so I asked her what was wrong, and she told me that she was on the verge of a panic attack. I told her to find a quiet spot where she could go through the breathing exercises. She had recently received bad news at work, where they were letting go of a lot of people in her department, which probably triggered her panic attack. When she found a quiet room where she could have that reaction, I just let her have that reaction. I kept telling her to breathe slowly and focus on her breathing the entire time, reassuring her to just focus on my voice. I think it took about two minutes, during which she really did start hyperventilating quite a bit, but I felt like I did a pretty good job guiding her through that episode. At the end of it, she came out of it crying but definitely a lot calmer compared to when she first called me. I feel like, as a medical professional, it is quite common for me to see these things, but when my sister had a panic attack, it did send me into a bit of a frenzy. But yeah, that's how I helped, and I felt like I did a pretty good job. My sister called me later, thanking me for just being there for her when she was having her episode.
