Historically, it was the fourth largest lake in the world, full of life, and surrounded by thriving fishing villages. However, over the past few decades it has undergone a catastrophic change. Due to over irrigation during Soviet era the lake began to shrink rapidly and today it has lost roughly 90% of its original volume, splinting into smaller bodies of water and living behind was the salty desert known as the Arolcum Desert. In fact, the Arolsea is very important for several reasons. First and foremost, it serves as a powerful wake-up call for global environmental awareness because it is often described by many experts as one of the worst man-made disasters in human history. Secondly, it has a massive impact on our climate change because the disappearance of water has altered our weather, making summers hotter and winters colder. Finally, it is still an important subject of scientific research as experts try to find ways to restore parts of it and reduce environmental damage. So overall, while the story of the RLC is quite tragic, it remains one of the most popular landmarks in my country.
