Traditional stories have always played a vital role in childhood as they not only entertain but also impart a valuable lesson. One tale that I particularly enjoy is the story of Hamid and his tongue which I read in my childhood. The story is about a little boy named Hamid who is very poor and live with his grandmother. On the occasion of Eid, when all the other children buy toys and sweets from the fair, Hamid decided to spend his small amount of money wisely. He buy a pair of tongue, which is usually used in the Indian kitchen tool called Chimta, for his grandmother, who used to burn her hand while baking chapatis. At first, other children make fun of him, but later they realized that Hamid has made a very thoughtful and useful choice. The story gives a strong message about selflessness, love, caring for family. However, I came to know the story during my school day when it was included in our Hindi literature textbook. Later, my teacher narrated it in a class with great emotion which made it even more memorable for me. When I first heard the story, I felt deeply touched. I admired harmony, maturity and sense of responsibility. Even though he was just a small child, it made me realize that true happiness comes from thinking about other, not just about ourselves. Even today when I recall the story, it’s inspired me to be more caring selfless towards my family.
