I'd like to talk about an elderly woman who was a close friend of my father. She lived about 3 kilometers away from my house with her sister's family. She had been keeping alive an old local tradition called 'self-combing.' This tradition involves women styling their hair in a specific way, similar to married women, to demonstrate their commitment to remaining single for life. This tradition stemmed from a time when husbands often mistreated their wives. She told me that she immigrated to Singapore and worked there for over a decade, saving enough money to send back home to support her siblings and their families. She also helped my family whenever we needed it. I feel deeply indebted and grateful to her. I think she was a truly lovely woman. She never had children, so I treated her like my own grandmother, a grandmother figure. I truly wish she could rest in peace.
