Overall, in the UK most of the total expenditure went to leisure followed by utility bills. Compared with New Zealand, most of the money was spent on food and drinks in 1980 and on utility bills in 2008. However, the least amount of money went in both countries and years to the category ‘other’.
In 1980, 27% of the total expenditure went to leisure followed with a close 26% to utility bills. Furthermore, 23% of their money went to food and drinks. In New Zealand, food and drinks was the most popular category with 29% followed by utility bills with 27%. transport and leisure were close to each other in New Zealand with 17% and 18% respectively. In both countries, just 9% went to ‘other’.
Compared with 2008, in the UK 7% more of the expenditure went to leisure and just 2% more to utility bills. Nevertheless, food and drinks declined dramatically to 13%. transport and other slightly changed from 15% and 9% to 14% and 11% respectively. In New Zealand, more money went to utility bills: 31%. Except the category ‘other’, all remaining categories declined slightly.
