The bar chart illustrates the amount of salt consumed by the American people in 2000. Units are measured in milligrams.
Overall, the amount of salt intake by men was more than women in all age groups. Both men and women between 20 and 39 years old consumed the most amount of salt, while the least amount of salt was eaten by those who were under 6. Furthermore, the salt consumption of both genders in all age groups are higher than recommended adult salt intake except kids under 6 years old.
In terms of the amount of salt intake by men, it started at around 2,000 milligrams for under 6 years; afterwards, the figure increased and reached a high of approximately 4,500 milligrams for 20 to 39 age group, before falling slightly to about 3,500 milligrams in over 60’s men.
On the other hand, the figure began at just over 1,000 milligrams for female kids up to 6 years old. For four next years, the salt intake by women remained stable at almost 3,000 milligrams, after which it dropped to 2,500 milligrams for oldest age group, which was exactly the same as the recommended adult salt intake.
