The line graph delineates anticipated changes in the extent to which the internet is employed for four distinct purposes – downloading films, sending emails, shopping and studying online courses – over the fifteen-year period from 2015 to 2030.
Overall, the projections point to a pronounced divergence between the four purposes. While shopping and studying online courses are expected to undergo substantial expansion, email usage is likely to register only marginal growth. Conversely, downloading films is the sole activity forecast to experience a sustained contraction, ultimately occupying the lowest position among the four by 2030.
At the outset, shopping accounted for approximately 40 units, considerably below the corresponding figure for sending emails, at 80. Nevertheless, its trajectory thereafter is markedly upward: the figure is anticipated to almost double to roughly 75 in 2020, before advancing to about 88 in 2025 and culminating at just below 100 by the end of the forecast period. A comparable, though less dramatic, progression is predicted for studying online courses. Beginning at around 35 in 2015, its level is projected to climb to approximately 65 in 2020, after which the pace of growth moderates, reaching nearly 73 in 2025 and about 78 in 2030. By comparison, sending emails remains relatively stable, edging upwards from 80 to just over 80 between 2015 and 2020 and subsequently attaining approximately 86 and 88 in the final two years shown.
The remaining category, downloading films, presents an unequivocally contrasting pattern. Having commenced at roughly 70 in 2015, its usage is forecast to diminish steadily, falling to around 60 by 2020 and subsequently declining to just above 50 in 2025. A further, albeit relatively modest, reduction is then anticipated, leaving the figure at approximately 48 in 2030. Consequently, whereas downloading films initially ranked second among the four purposes, it is projected to relinquish this position and become the least prevalent form of internet use by the close of the period.
