Overall, the proportion of global population of aged 60 and over is projected to rise between 2000 and 2050. Europe recorded the highest regional percantage in the base year and is projected to retain this position in the forecasted year, whereas Latin America had the lowest percentage is expected to continue ranking last. In addition, the global avarage is predicted to grow almost two-fold over the given period.
In 2000, Europe recorded the highest proportion of people aged 60 over at 22%, followed by North America 11% and Oceania 11. By 2050, these figures are projected to rise to 26% and 22%, respectively.
The remaining regions had considerably lower percentages in 2000. Asia and Latin America stood at 12% and 7%, while Africa had the lowest figure of 5%. By 2050, all three regions are expected to experience substantial growth, reaching 28%,18%,and 12% respectively. Meanwhile, the world avarage is forecast to increase from 13% to 26%.
