The bar chart illustrates the volume of electric car sales in three major markets – China, Europe, and the United States – over an eight-year period from 2016 to 2023. Units are measured in millions.
Overall, electric vehicle (EV) sales witnessed a considerable upward trend across all three regions, with China emerging as the dominant market by a significant margin, particularly in the latter half of the period.
In 2016, sales in all three regions were relatively low and comparable. China and Europe each recorded sales of approximately 0.3 million, while the United States trailed slightly behind at around 0.2 million. This pattern of similar, modest growth continued until 2019.
From 2020 onwards, a dramatic divergence occurred. China’s sales began to surge exponentially, rising from about 1.2 million in 2020 to over 8 million by 2023. Europe also experienced robust growth during this time, climbing from roughly 1.4 million to 3.5 million, yet it consistently lagged behind China. In contrast, the United States saw the most gradual increase, with sales only reaching about 1.5 million in 2023, a figure substantially lower than the other two markets.
By 2023, China’s EV sales were more than double those of Europe and over five times higher than the figure for the United States.
