The bar chart provides information about four kinds of music genres recordings in the USA—rock, pop, jazz, and classical—that were bought by five age groups in 2010. All data are provided in millions.
Overall, younger age groups tend to favor rock and pop music, while older age groups show a stronger preference for jazz and especially classical music.
To begin with, the 16-22 age group bought almost 5 million recordings related to the pop genre, followed by rock at around 3.8 million. While jazz and classical were not popular among teenagers, they made up approximately 2 million. A similar pattern is seen in the 23-31 age group. Although the figures for pop are slightly lower than for rock, their sales are still leading.
On the other hand,in the32-45 and 46-57 age groups, sales across all three genres except pop became more balanced, and their indexes were between 2.5 and 3.5 million; however, sales of pop music were stable in both age groups. Furthermore, the classical genre was most dominant, with nearly 5 million sales among the 58+ age group. In addition, the popularity of rock, pop, and jazz was nearly 3 million, respectively, in that group.
