A glance at the diagram provided reveals some data on the proportion of labour force in the five different fields in the UK between 1841 and 2011.
Overall, workers involved in the manufacturing, services and agriculture/fishing outnumbered those who were employed in the other two industries. Despite recruiting the largest number of employees in 1841,manufacturing had been replaced by service industry by 2011.
In 1841, manufacturing had the largest proportion of workers compared to the rest of the fields (38%). However, it plummeted to mere 9% in the final year. Similarly, agriculture and fishing followed nearly the same pattern dropping abruptly from nearly a quarter to 1%. Meanwhile, being the second largest industry with one third of workforce in 1841, the field of services became dominant with 81% leaving behind manufacturing in 2011.
In terms of the industries with the lowest proportion of labour force in 1841, construction and energy/water started at 5% and 3% accordingly. By the end of the time frame, the figure for the construction had increased marginally to 8%, while that for energy/water had fallen by 2%.
