The chart below demonstrates share of labor involved in different economic sectors of the United Kingdom between 1841 and 2011. Services had by far the highest percentage of the workforce among all industries in the next one hundred and seventy years, wherein most people who lived in the UK were interested in manufacturing in 1841.
What stands out is that the second most popular workplace in the mid-nineteenth century, became unattainable with a sharp growth from 33% in 1841 to 81% in 2011. By contrast, manufacturing ranked first with a 36% and showed 27% reduction in numbers.
Another notable trend is the decline of agriculture/fishing and the rise of construction and energy/water industries. The third largest proportion of workers was allocated to agriculture/fishing companies at the end of 1800’s. However, at the beggining of 21st century, they had lost their prominence, reaching the same percentage as the energy/water industry, both at just one percent. In contrast, construction experienced a significant rise to 8%.
