Overall, total tiger population was gradually growing throughout the period, reaching its peak in 2002. The Bandipur reserve had the most tigers, whereas Buxa had the least over the period.
From 1972 to 1993, total number of tigers was increasing, starting from only 268 and finishing at 1336. In 1995 there was a slight drop in population of tigers, falling to 1333. Then, it rose again, reaching the highest point 1576 tigers at the end of the period.
As for reserves, Bandipur consistently had the highest number of tigers. In 1972, Bandipur had 60 tigers , but the number grew significantly until 2002 , reaching 250 tigers, which is 100 tigers more than second most popular reserve Corbett. In contrast, Buxa stayed with the least amount of tigers, having less than 50 tigers over the period. Sundarbans experienced a steady increase, growing from 25 to 80 tigers. Corbett and Kanha had similar trends, starting at the same point in 1972, then having some fluctuations. In 2002, Corbett and Kanha reached 140 and 130 tigers respectively.
