The bar chart illustrates the percentage of people aged 65 and over from two different groups: living in 1985 and the percentage of older people that have been predicted for 2035. The columns are also divided into 4 different regions: England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the fifths column is the total presence in the UK. Overall, the initial impression from the chart is that the population of the country will have aged dramatically by 2035.
In 1985, the majority of the older population lived in Wales, while the smallest, around 12%, lived in Northern Ireland. The proportion of the older persons that lived in England is similar to the proportion in all of the UK regions. Approximately 14% lived in Scotland.
In terms of the predictions by 2035, the percentage in Wales will have been greater than in the other parts and will have gone up to around 26%. Northern Ireland and England will have reached the same percentage, around 23%. However, in comparison to 1985, England will have increased by almost 8%, while the percentage of Northern Ireland will have grown to around 11%.
In Scotland the change will have been in the same direction, with the population that will have increased from 14% to 25%. The proportion of the elderly people living in the British Isles will have grown by more than half.
