The chart illustrates the time spent by 10 to 15-year-olds on two types of entertainment, namely chatting on the Internet and playing on game consoles on an average school day in the UK.
Overall, we can see that playing computer games is marginally more popular than chatting online. However, completely different trends can be seen if we look at the specific figures for boys and girls on the chart.
Boys aged 10 to 15 years are really in favor of playing on the games console, with the time playing computer games over 4 hours or more higher than chatting online. According to the chart, while 85% of boys play games everyday, only 55% chat online daily. Furthermore, the majority of boys play on their consoles more than 1 hour a day, and 10% do this activity for 4 hours or more.
By contrast, girls prefer chatting online. Close to 70% of 10 to 15-year-olds girl chat on the internet every day, compared to about 50% of this cohort who play computer games. Of the girls who play on consoles, most of them play less than one hour, whereas most girls chat on the internet do so for more one hour, and nearly 10% chat for 4 hours or more.
