The bar chart illustrates the average hour spent on a daily basis in leisure and sports activities between the youngest and oldest generations in the US in the year 2015.
Overall, the older group dedicated a larger portion of their free time to passive activities including watching TV, reading, relaxing and thinking. In contrast, active activities in terms of socializing and communicating, playing game or computer use and sport were more common among younger generation. Both of generations similarly spent most of their time on watching TV.
Passive activities were more common among older people with watching TV taking the largest portion, consuming 4.5 hours of their day. The youth also favored watching TV, but to a lesser extent, with about 2.4 hours daily. Reading was the second most common reference activities for the 75 and over age group with 1 hour everyday, five times in comparision with youngster, with only 12 minutes for reading. The gap between 2 generations were even more evident in relaxing and thinking, with seniors dedicating 0.6 hour of their freetime, 6 times more than the 15 to 19 age group.
Active activities, however, were more popular with younger generations than the older ones. Playing games and computer use for leisure were the second most common avtivity for this group, with 1.1 hours, double the half-hour daily average for older individuals. Sport, exercise and recreaction also seen the similar pattern with 0.6 hour average for younger individuals, triple the older group with only and 6 minutes on a daily basis. In contrast, Socializing and communicating show the smallest difference between 2 generation which is about 0.8 and 0.7 hour for younger and older citizens respectively.
