The bar chart compares the percentages of teenage boys and girls in Canada who identified four different leisure activities as their favourite.
Overall, there were clear differences between the preferences of the two genders. Shopping was by far the most popular activity among boys, whereas music was the only activity that was equally popular with both boys and girls. By contrast, girls showed the greatest preference for music and the least preference for shopping.
Looking first at sports and shopping, the figures for boys were considerably higher than those for girls. Approximately 28% of Canadian teenage boys chose sports as their favourite leisure activity, compared with only around 13% of girls. An even more pronounced gender difference can be seen in shopping. This activity was preferred by about 37% of boys, making it the most popular choice overall, while the corresponding figure for girls was just 8%.
Turning to computer games and music, the difference between the two genders was much smaller. Around 19% of boys selected computer games as their favourite activity, compared with approximately 16% of girls. Music, meanwhile, was equally popular among both groups, accounting for about 21% in each case. Thus, while boys tended to favour sports, computer games and particularly shopping, girls showed a comparatively stronger preference for music.
