Overall, it is clear that there was a decrease in the number of applicants from China, while the opposite was true for the US and Japan. In addition, the lowest figure can be recorded in Russia, although its numbers remained relatively stable throughout the period shown.
In the first year, the number of Chinese applicants was the highest, exceeding 25,000. However, this figure declined steadily to about 18,000 after two years, followed by a levelling off in 2007 and then a minimal drop to 15,000 in the final year. in contrast, a continual upward trend was seen in USA applicant numbers, starting at around 13,000 and rising considerably to finish at the initial figure of China, over 25,000.
Turning to Japan, applications from this country also increased over the period, albeit at a much lower rate, growing minimally from around 6,000 to 10,000 at the end of the timeframe. Additionally, the universities in the country consistently received the fewest applications from Russian students, with their figures hovering around the 3,000 mark over the period in question.
