The bar chart represents the data of households owned or rented by people from two parts of Great Britain during the period from 1918 to 2011. Generally speaking, in England and Wales from the beginning to the end, the number of owned houses has increased significantly. Nevertheless, the preference for rented has fallen down, obviously.
To start with, in the around 50 years from 1918 the dominant preference in accommodation was renting. In 1918, it took nearly 80% of households, whereas the percentage of owned apartments fluctuated near 20%. Until 1971, rented houses were more popular in two kingdoms, as this year the number of owned households reached the 50% and beat the popularity of rented ones.
After this historical date, people used to prefer to have their own house instead of renting variant. In 2001 the popularity of owned homes last reached the pick (near 70%) and in the last 10 years it has been reduced to above 60%.
