To begin with, Wales and Northern Ireland were the leading countries in the percentage of water in the UK.Wales stood at under 100% in 1990, which experienced a sharp decline of 18% from 1998 to 2000. While Northern Ireland was about 85% in the initial year, followed by stability, the proportions increased dramatically to nearly 98%, remaining predominant among the countries.
England and Scotland, on the other hand, saw an increasing trend with fluctuations over the period. Water quality in England was around 45% in 1990.The figures then continued with major fluctuations in nine years and made up 50% in 2002.Similarly, there was a sharp rise in the percentage of river quality to 60% until 2000.Then it descended by 20 percentage points in the final year.
