The table illustrates the popularity shift of adult leisure activities in a small Tunisian town between 1980 and 2020. Overall, there were seven hobbies in total and the participation levels for these activities varied over the 40-year period.
In 1980, the figures for watching TV and films, reading books, and going to the gym were all 100. By 2000, the number of people watching TV and films had risen considerably to 130, representing the largest increase among these three activities. The figure for reading also increased, reaching 117, while gym partipcipation rose slightly to 105 people. By 2020, these figures had climbed further to 160, 133, and 110 respectively, with most people having higher preference for TV and film entertainment.
In contrast, the remaining hobbies generally showed downward trends in participation. The number of baking-enthusiasts fell slightly from 100 in 1980 to 95 in 2000, before declining further to 90 in 2020. Meanwhile, the number of gardening-enjoyers experienced a more noticeable decrease, dropping from 100 to 83 and then to 67. Finally, gaming participants underwent the most significant decline, falling sharply from 100 in 1980 to 70 in 2000 and just 40 in 2020. By comparison, playing music was the only activity that showed no change in popularity, with its figure remaining stable at 100 throughout the 40-year period.
