1800 million tonnes of waste was disposed of in landfill in 2005, with a two-fold fall to about 900 million tonnes in 2007. The opposite trend can be seen in the figure for burning waste, which increased significantly from around 500 million tonnes in 2005 to about 900 million tonnes in 2007, while the figure for waste dumped at sea witnessed a levelling off, at 600 million tonnes until 2007.
The amount of waste processed in landfill continued to drop before ending at precisely 600 million tones, while the figure for waste disposed by burning grew steadily to 900 million tones to become the highest in 2008. Additionally, the amount of waste dumped at sea decreased slightly to just under 600 million tonnes in the last year of the period.
