In general, the number of Japanese people travelling abroad between 1985 to 1995 increased gradually, except the slight decrease in 1991. The percentage of the people visiting Australia from Japan also went up steadily although this trend showed a little decline in 1989 and 1994.

When looked at in more detail, the number of people going abroad from Japan was as low as 5 million in 1985. This number increase slowly and doubled in 1990 with almost 12 million people.
