The pie charts illustrate the proportions of water used across five different sectors over a ten-year period from 1997 to 2007.
Overall, the food industry was by far the largest consumer of water in both years, despite experiencing a slight decline over the period. By contrast, the building industry accounted for the smallest share of water use throughout the two years.
In 1997, the food industry consumed 48% of the total water supply, and although this figure fell moderately, it still represented the largest proportion at 41% in 2007. Household water use increased considerably, rising from 14% to 21% over the period. Similarly, the proportion allocated to industrial services grew substantially, almost doubling from 13% in 1997 to 25% in 2007.
In contrast, the manufacturing sector experienced a modest decline, with its share falling from 17% to 11% by 2007. Likewise, the building industry recorded a marginal decrease, dropping from 3% to just 2%, making it the smallest consumer of water in both years.
