The charts illustrate how the percentage of people’s total spending on different categories and commodities in a particular European country changed from 1998 to 2008.
Overall, the proportions of clothing and electronic goods followed upward trends, while the percentages of holiday, newspaper and magazines and go to the cinema decreased, albeit at varying rates. Additionally, the proportion of electronic goods was the highest over the period.
Looking at the data more closely, the proportion of clothing significantly increased, starting at 12% in 1998 and rising to 18% in 2008. Similarly, the percentage of electronic goods dramatically rose from 16% in 1998 to 20% in ten years. Meanwhile, the percentage of eating out was the same at 6% over the period.
In contrast, the percentages of holiday, newspaper and magazines, and go to the cinema bucked the trend. The figure for holidays slightly decreased, starting at 8% in 1998; the figure dropped to 5% in ten years. Additionally, the percnetages of newspaper/magazines and go to the cinema similarly decreased over the years, there were a minimal drop from 3% in 1998 to 1% in 2008.
