Overall, total spending increased from 1998 to 2008 across most categories.
In 1998, electronic goods represented the highest proportion of consumer spending at 16%, followed by clothing at 12%. The figures for holidays and eating out were considerably lower, at 8% and 6%. Moreover, people spent only 3% of their total budget on newspapers and magazines as well as going to the cinema.
In 2008, electronic goods had increased to 20%, while clothing recorded an even larger increase of 6 percentage points, climbing to 18%. Furthermore, the proportion spent on holidays fell from 8% to 5%. Spending on newspapers and going to the cinema dropped significantly to 1%. Whilst, eating out remained stable at 6% throughout both years.
