The line graph provides information about the value of trade between Australia and three countries, namely China, the USA and Japan, from 2002 to 2005, in billions of Australian dollars.
Overall, exports were higher than imports in all three trading relationships throughout the period, except for China in 2008. The most significant change was a marked increase from China, while trade with the US remained relatively stable and exports to Japan fluctuated considerably.
Recording China, Australia exported goods to both China and Japan worth around 40 billion AUD (Australian Dollars) in 2002. Australia imported approximately AUD 30 billion from China and about 35 billion AUD in Japan.
After falling to around 20 billion dollars in 2005 imports from China increased markedly and reached approximately 40 billion AUD in 2008, surpassing the value of exports. Although exports to Japan changed only slightly by 2005, they then rose sharply to a peak of around 65 billion dollars before declining to 50 billion AUD at the end of the period. Meanwhile, imports from Japan are gradual and slight decline at around AUD 30 billion throughout the period. Exports to China saw a similar trend, remaining almost constant.
Trades with the US remained almost unchanged at 20 billion AUD. However, import values grew slightly to approximately 25 billion dollars.
