In 1980, bathroom usage showed the largest share of residential water consumption at 25%, closely followed by washing clothes at 22%. The garden and toilet accounted for 20% and 18% of the total, respectively, while the kitchen made up the smallest portion at only 15%.
By 2008, the distribution of water had changed significantly. The proportion of water consumed in the kitchen doubled to 30%, becoming the main category along with the bathroom, which also went up to 30%. In contrast, the figures for the toilet and washing clothes declined to 14% and 15%, whereas water used for the garden saw the most dramatic decline, falling to just 8%.
