The pie charts compare how consumers distributed their spending across seven categories in 2009 and 2019.
Overall, food and drink remained the largest expense in both years, although its share decreased over time. In contrast, spending on smartphones increased dramatically, becoming one of the major categories by 2019. Most other sectors experienced only moderate changes.
In 2009, consumers spent 42% of their budget on food and drink, which was by far the highest figure. The second biggest category was transport, accounting for 22%. The remaining sectors were significantly smaller: clothes and furniture each made up 10%, while entertainment represented 8%. Expenditure on smartphones and books was minimal, at 6% and 2% respectively.
By 2019, the proportion spent on food and drink fell to 39%, and transport also declined sharply to 12%. Meanwhile, spending on smartphones rose from 6% to 19%, making it the second largest category. Other categories changed slightly: clothes increased to 11%, furniture decreased to 8%, and entertainment grew to 10%. Finally, books dropped to just 1%, remaining the smallest share overall.
