The chart illustrates the comparison of the proportion of consumer spending in seven different sectors in 2009 and 2019.
Overall, whereas the share of expenditure increased in clothes, entertainment, furniture, and smartphones, the opposite was decreased, such as food and drink, transport, and books. Furthermore, the figure for consumer spending on furniture experienced the most dramatic alteration. In addition, food and drink stayed constant at the top of the list throughout the study period.
Firstly, in 2009, food and drink accounted for the largest share at 42 %, followed by transport at 22 %. Clothes and furniture were at the same level at 10 %. By contrast, smaller shares were seen in entertainment at 8 % and books at 6%, meanwhile, smartphones represented the smallest category at just 2 percent.
Secondly, in 2019, food and drink made up at 39 %, while entertainment stood at 19 %. Similar proportions were recorded for transport, clothes, and smartphones at approximately 12 %. In contrast, the less noticeable trends were furniture at 8 % and books at only 1 %.
