The charts compare the amount of renewable energy produced in four countries between 2010 and 2020, and the breakdown of the energy produced.
Overall, total renewable energy production accounted for the highest amount of energy in the United States throughout the period, while China started with a low amount of energy and increased considerably, accounting for a similar amount of energy by the end of the period. India produced the smallest amount of energy throughout the period. Meanwhile, the energy source breakdown constituted the highest proportion in the wind category and the smallest percentage in bioenergy. By contrast, renewable energy in the US accounted for the highest percentage in the wind category and the smallest in the bioenergy category.
Regarding total renewable energy production, the United States accounted for the highest amount of energy at the beginning, at 60 TWh, and increased rapidly to 120 TWh in 2020. Meanwhile, Germany and China accounted for almost identical amounts of energy, at 42 TWh and 30 TWh, respectively, in 2010, and increased gradually to 80 TWh in Germany and 120 TWh in China. In addition, India produced the smallest amount of energy in 2010, at merely 12 TWh, and increased significantly to 50 TWh in 2020.
In terms of energy source breakdown, the wind category accounted for the highest proportion at 37%. Meanwhile, solar and hydropower made up the same proportions at 24% and 20%, respectively. By contrast, the bioenergy category made up the smallest percentage at 19%.
Regarding renewable energy in the US, the wind category started at 20 TWh and increased considerably to approximately 75 TWh in 2020, while hydropower also started at 20 TWh and increased steadily to roughly 22 TWh. Meanwhile, solar and bioenergy started with almost identical amounts of energy, at approximately 10 TWh. Solar energy increased rapidly to roughly 43 TWh, while bioenergy increased gradually to 20 TWh in 2020.
