The charts illustrate steel demand, production and import between 1970 and 2000 in the UK, along with the number of workers in the steel employment.
Overall, both steel demand and production declined, while imports slightly increased over the 30-year period. Meanwhile, the employment in the steel industry saw a significant drop.
In 1970, total steel demand in the UK was 200 million tonnes, which decreased steadily to around 50 million tonnes by the end of the period, while a production of steel in the UK showed almost the same decrease with some differences in volume. At beginning of the period, the amount production was just below 200 million tonnes, after which it experienced a constant fall, ending at around 45 million tonnes in 2000. Meanwhile, imports saw slight growth, starting at almost zero in 1970 before increasing gradually to nearly 45 million tonnes between 1970 and 2000.
The number of people employed in the steel industry between 1970 and 2000 saw a significant dip. This figure started at around 50 thousand in 1970 before decreasing dramatically to just above 20 thousand in 1990 and it, then, remained nearly stable until the end of the period with just below 20 thousand.
