Band 9: The diagram below shows how an igloo was made out of snow (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 1 Sample)

The diagram illustrates the process of constructing an igloo from hard-packed snow.

Overall, the construction involves eight stages, beginning with cutting blocks of compacted snow and ending with a completed igloo that includes an entrance and ventilation holes. Throughout the process, snow blocks of different sizes are arranged in a circular pattern before the structure is strengthened and finished.

At the first stage, a snow saw is used to cut blocks from hard-packed snow. These blocks are then arranged in a circular layout measuring approximately four metres in diameter to form the base of the igloo. After that, additional blocks are stacked in gradually narrowing layers until a dome-shaped structure is created. A single block is subsequently placed at the top to lock the dome securely into position.

Next, loose snow is applied to the exterior of the igloo to fill any gaps between the blocks and improve insulation. Once the outside has been reinforced, the entrance is cut out at ground level. In the following stage, the interior is smoothed and shaped using a tool to create an even internal surface. Finally, several air holes are made through the roof, allowing ventilation while maintaining the stability of the finished igloo
