The diagram illustrates the provision of electricity and workings of solar panels for residential homes. The system requires five main components: solar panels, inverter, electrical panel, utility meter, and utility grid.
These components work harmoniously in order to convert energy from the sun into electricity.Firstly, the sun rays are absorbed by the solar panels which are then converted for use by the inverter. Secondly, the electricity is distributed via the electrical panel into different outlets and appliances within the house. Finally, any excess electricity produced flows into the utlity meter and later provided by the utility grid.
The solar panels convert electromagnetic waves into direct current. However, direct current can’t be used directly for domestic use; therefore, the inverter converts the direct current into alternating current. Furthermore, the electrical panel divides and displaces the current into the required areas around the house.
In the case that electricity is produced in excess, the utility meter will pass the electricty back to the utility grid. Therefore, when the demand for electricity exceeds the amount produced by the solar panels the grid will provide sufficient electricity.
