To begin with, chlorophyll in the leaves captures sunlight, especially in the green wavelengths, which generates the energy needed to power photosynthesis. At the same time, water is absorbed by the roots and transported upward through the stem to reach the leaves. As mentioned before, there is a portion of sugar produced in the process of photosynthesis converted into starch and stored in the roots. This storage serves as a reserve energy source for the period when the plant is unable to photosynthesise.
