The diagram depicts the process of how newspapers are printed, called lithography. In overview, the process is series of 6 main steps which involve many sets of rollers for embedding image from the printing plate onto paper.
In the beginning, the printing plate is delivered through the dampening rollers to moisten the plate for ensuring smooth printing process and preventing ink from attaching to non-image areas. Then, the plate is passed through ink rollers which apply ink onto the plate.
In the subsequence stage, after delivering the printing plate to the blanket cylinder, the inked image on the plate is impressed onto the paper which is conveyed by series of rollers. After that, the paper goes through the impression cylinder. In this step, the impression cylinder presses the paper against blanket cylinder to ensure that the image is embedded onto the paper certainly. Finally, the paper is heated and cooled for drying and setting the ink to prevent smudging and paper damage.
