The picture illustrates the several stages in the life cycle of a monarch butterfly.Overall, the cycle comprises three main stages and takes almost ten weeks. The process of becoming a butterfly occurs in different places.
Initially, the monarch butterfly begins life on the milkweed’s leaves as an egg for four to seven days. The egg hatches into small green caterpillar which eats the leaves. Over a period of two to three weeks,it grows to about two centimetres, then the caterpillar makes its way to branch to become a chrysalis for eight to fifteen days.
Secondly, the adult monarch butterfly forms from that chrysalis. The monarch butterfly grows to seven to ten centimetres when it reaches adulthood. At that time it searches variety of flowers which it gets nectar for feeding. In addition, its life span is two to four weeks. The cycle continues like this, with the butterfly period repeating again.
