The series of diagrams show the life circle and the process of production of silk cloth. Overall, the life cycle of the silkworm includes 4 stages, commencing with being eggs and ending as a cocoon before turning to moth. The manufacture of silk is a man-made linear process comprising 6 main steps.
To begin with, the eggs are produced by the moth and it takes 10 days for those eggs to hatch into silkworm larva. The larva takes mulberry leaf as food and after a period of 4 to 5 weeks, the larva forms a silk thread which then turns into a cocoon after 3 – 8 days. Silkworms will stay in the cocoon for 16 days before becoming the moth and start a new cycle.
On the other hand, the first step of the manufacturing process is selecting. The selected cocoons then will be boiled in the water. The cocoons then will be unwinded and the threads can have its length up to 900 metres. Threads will be twisted. At this stage, there are two ways to treat the threads, dyeing or weaving it before dying.
