The diagram illustrates the steps of how the uranium is utilized in the generation of nuclear power. The overall process seems to contain 6 major steps which are discussed below.
Firstly, the uranium must be extracted through the mines, since it is the fuel for nuclear reaction. Then, the raw form of uranium which is extracted from underground mines,is processed into a gaseous state. The uranium gas is condensed such that we obtain high density of uranium, which is used to produce U-235 fuel pellets. This fuel is used in the nuclear powerplant to induce a nuclear reaction which generates a huge amount of power, that produces an output of about 7 billion kWh of electricity per year per station.
The fuel is replaced after every fours years. The discarded fuel is stored properly. If the old fuel is capable of being re-used after being re-processed, then those fuels are again utilized in the power station. Finally, the untreatable fuels are separated and carefully stored in a stainless steel containers which are buried deep inside the earth.
