These three tables give information on the population statistics in New York City between 1800 and 2000, with the second and the third tables illustrate population figures and proportions of the 5 districts of New York.

Overall, a consistently upward trend in the number of population can be observed in the city’s total population while the figures in different districts were notably different between the year 1900 and year 2000.

Starting with the figure of 79216 in 1800, the number of city dwellers surged dramatically to more than 3 million in 1900, then maintained its upward trend to reach 8 millions by 2000.

As for the districts’ population and proportion, the Manhattan owned 76% of the total population initially, despite the population maintained rising compared to 100 years ago in 1900, its percentage went down to 54% in 1900 and ended with mere 19% at the close of the period. Conversely, the citizens’ number of other districts experienced a surge from a mere 18701 in 1800 to more than 1 million after a century, evertually ended with a 4 fold figure in comparison with 1900. The increasing pattern can also been seen in the proportion of other districts, from 24% to 81% towards the end of period.
